Site AT3: Atascadero Creek
at Puente Drive
From Hollister Avenue, turn towards the ocean on Puente (just past San
Marcos High School if you are heading away from Goleta). Drive across
the bridge over the creek and park just past the bike path on the right
hand side. We sample downstream of the bridge. The creek here is a concrete
channel with steep sides so be careful going down (real fast baby steps
usually does the trick). Besides being the largest creek in the Santa
Barbara area, Atascadero has the longest continuous stream of water during
the dry months and we sample this stream at four locations. Heading upstream,
AT3 is our third location (MY1 is usually dry in the summer). At AT3 we
are above the golf course and agricultural uses and are seeing a, more
or less, pure suburban Santa Barbara pollution signal in the water.
