Site GA2: Glen Annie/Tecolotito Creek at Hollister Avenue
From Hollister Avenue, turn towards the mountains on
Storke/Glen Annie Road. Continue across the 101 freeway until the light
at Cathedral Oaks. Immediately after this light, turn left into a large
dirt pullout and park. There is a poorly maintained pathway leading into
the brush- follow it straight and then turn to the right (toward the mountains).
This site can be very overgrown during the spring so bushwhacking may
be involved! Continue toward the mountains and soon you will be standing
on the edge of the bank above the creek. Be very careful! The bank is
nearly vertical here- it is held up by an old metal retaining wall. You
must walk to the right at this point, along the edge of the bank, and
shortly you will reach a section that is less steep, where there is no
retaining wall. Carefully walk down the bank and sample here. We sample
at two sites along this creek; this is our uppermost (upstream) site.
Here we sample the bulk of the agricultural and golf course runoff that
strongly impacts Goleta Slough. Tecolotito Creek typically runs with water
throughout the summer because of these sources.
