Site 4: Lower Canada Larga
This site is located off of Ventura Avenue, just south
of the Canada Larga bridge. Canada Larga is a tributary to the Ventura
River. The site is carefully accessed by hopping over a small gate,
and walking down a concrete steam bank. Cement channelization of the
stream flow from upstream ends here at the sampling site. A VCFC flood
gauge is present at this location. However, the automated gauge does
not read until water levels reach one and a half feet. The opposite
stream bank is filled with vegetation, native and non-native, and a
mix of different sized rocks make up the banks once the cement ends.
Arundo and tobacco plants are plentiful just downstream of the sampling
site. The stream basin at this site is approximately forty feet in width.
During the dry season, there is little to no flow at this site.
