Site 5: Upper Canada Larga
This site is located 3.5 miles up Canada Larga Road,
at a small bridge over the creek. Land use at the site is predominantly
agricultural. The hills and the basin provide grazing for local ranches.
The water here is often very murky. The cars must be parked on the side
of the road, and one can reach the site by climbing down to the stream
next to the bridge. Native vegetation is abundant at Upper Canada Larga.
The stream is usually small and slow flowing. During the dry season
there is little to no flow in the wash. However, during the rainy season,
the stream expands in size. Upstream of the site are pastures and old
walnut orchards, with signs of frequent grading and tilling. City sewage
sludge was tilled into the soil here. There is a lot of bank and hillside
erosion in this drainage, which are signs of overgrazing.
